Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Town Hall Meeting

The 9th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Town Hall Meeting, "The Promises and Myths of Breast Cancer Research," will take place Sunday, September 30, at The Fairmont Chicago from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Town Hall provides an opportunity to visit exhibits and participate in interactive discussion of breakthroughs in breast cancer with Northwestern doctors. www.cancer.northwestern.edu/townhall/

Early Breast Cancer Detection
Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances that treatment will work. The goal is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are the most important factors in predicting the outlook for the patient. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year. Following the guidelines given here improves the chances that breast cancer can be found at an early stage and treated successfully.

What role does genetics play?
Breast cancer is sometimes caused by inherited gene mutations (changes). The genes in cells carry the hereditary information that is received from a person's parents. Hereditary breast cancer makes up approximately 5% to 10% of all breast cancer. Some altered genes related to breast cancer are more common in certain ethnic groups.

Breast Cancer Treatment

Instead of only one or two options, today there's an overwhelming menu of treatment choices that fight the complex mix of cells in each individual cancer.
