Gastrointestinal Oncology Program is co-directed by Al B. Benson III, MD, Professor of Medicine and Hemant Roy, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine. Members of this new program are highly focused on translational research. The goals of the program are to 1) to understand the etiology and pathobiology of GI cancers, using animal models and patient-derived materials, 2) to develop effective interventions, including educational and behavioral approaches, to prevent and treat GI cancers, 3) to apply innovations in nanotechnology and imaging to detect, characterize, and treat GI cancers. Program faculty, located at both the Chicago and Evanston campuses, have expertise across the spectrum of GI cancers and conduct clinical trials, including laboratory correlates, in esophagus, stomach, hepatobiliary, pancreas, colon, rectal, anal and neuro-endocrine cancers.
