Viral Replication Strategies

Research Team:  Hope, Horvath, Hummel, Jardetzky, Laimins, Lamb, Leis, Li, Longnecker, Pinto, Seth, Smith, Spear, and Thimmapaya

The processes of viral entry (Hope, Jardetzky, Laimins, Lamb, Longnecker, Smith, and Spear), genome transcription (Horvath, Hummel, Li, Laimins, Rundell, and Thimmapaya), genome replication (Laimins, Lamb, Rundell and Leis), and maturation from infected cells (Hope, Laimins, Lamb, Leis, Longnecker, Pinto, and Spear) is a focus of members of the Viral Oncogenesis Program. Experiments are directed at each stage of the virus replication cycle starting from virus entry, replication and maintenance of extrachromosomal virus and, ultimately, virus egress from infected cells. By identifying both viral and cellular proteins required for replication of oncogenic viruses as well as other viruses, it is expected that novel therapeutics that interdict viral replication at various stages in the virus life cycle will be identified. By controlling the spread of oncogenic viruses, neoplastic transformation can be controlled.
