Is my gift tax deductible?

Yes. The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University falls under Northwestern University's tax-exempt public charity (501(c)3) status as defined by the Internal Revenue Service. Your gift to the Cancer Center qualifies as a charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes as permitted by law.

Will I receive a receipt for my gift?

A receipt for your gift will be sent to your address (either on your check or your credit/debit card billing address), usually within 10 business days.

Why should I give to the Cancer Center?

Your charitable gift to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University will provide vital support for our programs in research, patient care and cancer prevention science. Philanthropy fills important needs not supported by government grants. The following are a few examples of how your gift can help:

  • Funding for promising new research programs
  • Support for the application of advances in technology through the purchase or upgrade of scientific equipment
  • Invest in cancer prevention science initiatives
  • Encourage the training of new investigators through postdoctoral endowments

Will a small gift make an impact?

Every gift makes a difference. The cumulative effect of several small gifts can be very significant. For example, your gift can help fund the start-up of a pilot project enabling a scientist to gather the preliminary data needed to compete for federal research grants. In this manner, the power of your gift is magnified many times.

How can I take advantage of my company's Matching Gift Program?

You can double or further multiply the impact of a gift if you are an employee, retiree or board member of a corporation that matches gifts to qualified institutions. Contact your company's human resources or personnel office to learn about its matching gift program and to obtain a matching gift form. You should fill out the donor portion of the form and include the paperwork with your gift.

The Cancer Center will fill out the recipient institution's portion of the form, verify receipt of the gift and then return the form to your company. Some companies have toll-free numbers or Web sites that you can use to register a gift to be matched. While a matching gift is not tax deductible for you, nor can it count toward a pledge payment, the match will count toward your overall giving level.
